While Ali was still an infant his father died while serving in the French army, and the family moved south along the river to Niafunké, the village he called home for the rest of his life.Īli was attracted to the power of music from an early age. He was his mother’s tenth son and the first to survive infancy. He released eight albums on World Circuit, won three Grammy awards and became a musical ambassador for both Mali and the African continent.Īli was born in 1939 in the village of Kanau on the banks of the Niger in the north west of the country. He was the first to attract international attention to the music of Mali as the African roots of the blues. Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré was a giant of African music.
